The Grand Canyon of Mississippi.

The Grand Canyon of Mississippi

The canyon is not visible from Hwy 587. When traveling on Hwy 587 north from the intersection of 587 and 586, you first must pass Morgan town, then take a sharp right to stay on 587. Drive another three, four miles and you'll see the first closed road to the right. Drive past it and take the next right. There are no landmarks; you are in the middle of nowhere! Drive to the end of the road where you will find another "Road Closed" sign.

You have to be brave and maybe a little foolish to get out and walk past the barricade on what appears to be an old highway that is collapsing. But you will see the canyon.

AKA "Mississippi's Little Grand Canyon" AKA Red Bluff is a chasm of naturally eroded red clay and sand that continues to advance and undermine the adjacent highway, which has been moved a couple of times.

Very interesting site, and well worth the drive, but don't try to use "Newsom" as the town if you're using a GPS. My Garmin, with maps updated a few months ago had no record of such a place. When you're there, the nearest address is "Foxworth."

Head north on MS-587 from US-98 and go about 10 miles. Pay attention because 587 makes a right turn at one point.

Grand Canyon of Mississippi

Red Bluff is called "The Grand Canyon of Mississippi". This natural canyon is formed by the erosion of millions of years accumulation of river and airborne dirt. It is over 150 feet deep, 1/2 mile wide and nearly a mile long. It gets larger with every rainstorm. The most striking feature of this wonder is the huge variety of colors in the soils. The large trees at the bottom did not grow there but slid downslope as the canyon walls eroded.

The state had to relocate MS Hwy. 587 several times, finally moving the road about 1/4 of a mile back. The original road is now closed to through traffic and is used at both ends for parking. Red Bluff Park is clearly marked. A short walk from the parking area brings you to the precipice. Rugged trails wind down to the bottom on both the north and south ends of the canyon. Some people climb the cliffs and carve their initials in the soft cliff face.
