Windmill.

Full Size Windmill

The windmill is working, but it is now a Windmill Food Hall and Wedding Reception Hall.

This would be a good place to stay when the Carlsbad Flower Fields open up. The flower fields open in March and I always buy a season ticket so I can visit and photograph during the various stages of growth. The windmill was a Pea Soup Anderson's when I was a little girl; it is now a TGIF. But the outlets are fun and they have recently opened a bunch of larger chain restaurants. It isn't too far from the beach.

We were in Carlsbad visiting the beautiful poppy fields when we found this strange building across the street. It seems to be attached a Holiday Inn and a restaurant. Unfortunately, the blades were not turning when we visited...not sure if they still work or not. But the windmill itself appears to have a fresh coat of paint and is in great shape.

[Greg Kopp, 04/08/2009]

March 2011: According to Stephen Bolling, "The windmill does indeed turn. It is too close to the Pacific Ocean however and winds are so strong they would cause the windmill to spin too fast. A motor is used to keep the windmill turning at a slow speed most of the year. When winds are strong the motor is shut off."

Towering over the freeway at the Palomar Airport exit on I-5, stands a full size windmill with blades that actually turn. This was originally one of the former Pea Soup Anderson's "chain" of restaurants (I think there's one other up south of Fresno). It now houses a banquet facility and is the entrance for a TGIFridays restaurant. It's also part of a Holiday Inn hotel complex.

Nearby are the Carlsbad flower fields, which are something to see in the Spring when in bloom.

And are those flowers, by any chance, TULIPS?
