Iowa City, Iowa: Big Wooden Buffalo Nickel
16 feet across. The nickel is mounted between two telephone poles, facing the road, in a farm field. Built in 2006 as a local political protest by Jim Glasgow, who stills maintains it.

It's close enough to a major highway that if you're on it, and into random roadside attractions, there's really no reason not to divert if you have the time. We were on our way to Nebraska from Indiana and I was cramming as many roadside attractions across Iowa in as I could, so this was perfect. My son was not nearly as excited about it.
[Author Brandon Grubb, 05/12/2025]This attraction is on a very busy, dangerous, and dusty road, just outside of a quarry entrance. For safe access park inside the quarry gate in the parking pull-off, and then walk across the street.

Claims to be the world's largest wooden nickel. Who really knows?? It's a fun and quick pit stop if you like quirky things. Not very far off I80. We weren't real sure where to park so made quick work of a photo!

According to KCRG News, the Nickel was built to protest the Johnson County supervisors' decision to raise speed limits on three streets. 16 feet, 3 inches in diameter. Weighs 4,000 pounds.
