Remains of the Imperial Dunes Plank Road

A wooden road was built across the Imperial Valley desert in 1916 to lure people from the east to San Diego. It was abandoned in 1928. A small section is still visible, but you're not allowed to drive on it.

Remains of the Imperial Dunes Plank Road

In addition to seeing the plank road, you can very clearly see the US/Mexico border fence. The border patrol was everywhere. They stopped on the road above the plank road and watched us until we left.

This is some awesome old time Americana -- the old Imperial Dune Plank Roadway. They smartly fenced it off, and while the dunes seem to cover everything, this is still visible!

Remains of the Imperial Dunes Plank Road

Very cool. Hard to believe people drove on it. The dunes around it are very interesting too. Lots of campers with off-road equipment in the immediate area. Worth a lookie-loo.
