- I-8 exit 156 onto Grays Wells Rd. Drive west along the south side of the freeway for three miles. There is a parking/camping area on the right; the Plank Road is on the left.

A wooden road was built across the Imperial Valley desert in 1916 to lure people from the east to San Diego. It was abandoned in 1928. A small section is still visible, but you're not allowed to drive on it.

In addition to seeing the plank road, you can very clearly see the US/Mexico border fence. The border patrol was everywhere. They stopped on the road above the plank road and watched us until we left.

This is some awesome old time Americana -- the old Imperial Dune Plank Roadway. They smartly fenced it off, and while the dunes seem to cover everything, this is still visible!
