Essex, California: Mitchell Caverns
Poor Jack Mitchell improved the road and built the rock buildings that are still used at Mitchell Caverns, but he died before the cave became a popular attraction. It's a three-quarter-mile walk from the visitor center to the cave, but this part of the Mojave Desert is elevated enough to not be too hot. Cave famously defaced for Hollywood by "The Doors" film crew in 1991.
