Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Mutter Museum
A fun medical museum of human pathology, but so dignified that you almost forget that you're looking at skulls, conjoined twins, and a giant colon.

Originally, a number of the items that are now in the Mutter Museum of medical curiosities were in the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology. Wistar, now a prestigious biomedical research institution, was originally a medical teaching museum. Visitors can still see mammoth sculptures by American sculptor Charles Rush (see the Philly Waterworks) in Wistar's atrium. There is a giant pelvis, an inner ear, and some eyes. In the 1970s, before the museum items were removed from Wistar to Mutter to make room for research labs, it was billed as the best place in the city for a lovers rendevous. Very quiet.
