According to a story in Ag Week, the Corn Palace's outdoor corn-art murals for 2020 -- they're changed every year -- won't be completed until early summer, a delay that Corn Palace director Doug Greenway said had never happened before. The corn-art murals are usually stripped off the outside of the building in the fall, after tourist season, and then new ones are created in place before the sub-freezing South Dakota winter sets in.
The 2020 Corn Palace mural theme will be "South Dakota Homegrown," which is slightly embarrassing because the delay, according to Ag Week, was caused by a bad growing season in 2019.
Corn Palace director Greenway looked on the bright side, pointing out that early summer 2020 tourists will have a unique chance to see the corn-art murals as they're being made. If it proves popular, he said, it might be repeated in future years as well.
