Amarillo, Texas: Cadillac Ranch

Is it just a line of ten graffiti-covered Cadillac wrecks buried nose-down in a littered, treeless farm field -- or is it art?

Cadillac Ranch

Not wheelchair accessible. Took my husband to Cadillac Ranch and he couldn't get through the [unattended] entrance in his wheelchair. I got him in with some MacGyvering on our part.

Cadillac Ranch is located on a two lane service road. You will park your car on the side of the service road and walk into the field to the cars. When we went it was super muddy but we still were able to tag the cars. You can bring your own spray paint but it seemed to us that most tourists left their paint cans behind in a milk crate, so if you don't have any paint there's a good chance you'll come across some on site.

Be aware that peddlers set up shop right at the gate -- do not feel obligated! We thought they were there to charge admission. Better and less cheap looking versions of the paint chip art can be found at the Cadillac Ranch Gift store.

Cadillac Ranch

At around 2 AM on September 9, 2019, someone set fire to the oldest Cadillac at Cadillac Ranch: the 1949 Club Sedan, furthest to the west. The jerks who did it were no doubt pushed to this extreme because the usual tool of monument jerk-vandalism -- spray paint -- would be invisible on the Cadillac Ranch cars, already smeared with countless layers of spray paint by adoring visitors.

Photos of the damage show that the victim car was charred, with some of its metal knocked off, but otherwise still similar to the other nine already-battered wrecks at Cadillac Ranch. After a few days of visitor spray-painting, most pilgrims probably won't notice the difference.

As we approached we saw something flapping in the wind and hanging from the rear wheels of most cars. On closer inspection, they were large trash bags full of mostly empty spray paint cans. Glad to see this improvement to the site.
