Anamosa, Iowa: Giant American Gothic Statue (In Transition)
A 25-foot-tall version of the farm couple from Grant Wood's painting, "American Gothic." The statue moves from place to place; it's already spent years in Chicago, Dubuque, Des Moines, Elkhart, Peoria, and Anamosa, which was Grant Wood's hometown. Went back to the statue shop for maintenance in September 2022.

Chicago, IL: A 25-foot interpretation of Grant Wood's famous (and often parodied) painting American Gothic sits at 401 Michigan Ave., just down the road from the original painting that hangs at the outstanding Chicago Institute of Art. The sculptor is J. Seward Johnson. It's awesome in its incongruity: earnest farm folk among gleaming skyscrapers, the Midwest's salt of the earth among the Midwest's most sophisticated urban backdrop, humble farmers blown up to giant urban dwellers.
[Gunnar Johnson, 07/28/2009]The statue has left Chicago and has moved to Mesa, Arizona, where it will tower over a downtown intersection from March through July 2010. The statue's owner -- a California foundation -- says that it wants to keep moving the statue from city to city.
