On September 9, 1942, Nobuo Fujita became the only Japanese soldier to bomb the American mainland in World War II (He flew from an offshore submarine, and the bombs' only victims were trees). Twenty years later, Fujita returned to the nearest town of his attack, Brookings, Oregon, invited by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He presented his ancestral samurai sword -- which he'd had with him in his attack plane -- as a token of friendship. Fujita's 1997 New York Times obituary claimed that he planned to kill himself with the sword if the townspeople were still mad at him. They weren't, he didn't, and the sword is proudly displayed in the Brookings library.
