Buford, Wyoming: Ames Brothers Pyramid

The Ames Brothers were fatcat 19th century industrialists, now as forgotten as the lonely, towering sagebrush pyramid that was built in their honor.

Ames Monument

The Ames Monument is, indeed, hollow, but it has a huge pillar up the center to support the superstructure. One may almost touch both sides of its inner and outer walls when in it. The entrance to the inside is at ground level (look closely outside) and was closed up sometime after 1973. One had to crawl like a spelunking snake to get in. Many climbers used to free scale to the top, running up like monkeys and thanking their new gum-soled climbing shoes.

Drove the 1.8 miles to the pyramid in the snow. No more than 5 minutes off the interstate.

The road into the Ames Brothers Pyramid has been graded and worked into wonderful condition! Don't let fear of ruts scare you off. It sits literally just off the interstate so it won't cost you any time loss bigger than a bathroom break.

The Ames Brothers Pyramid

1.8 miles of pure bumpy dirt road, but well worth the drive. So close to the freeway you can't pass it up when you drive by.

We agree. The Ames Brothers Pyramid is stark, strange, and only a couple of minutes off an interstate exit.
