Plaque, 2019.

Historic Plaque for Fictional Event

Perhaps only San Francisco has the temerity to put up a historical plaque at a place where a fictional event took place. On Bush St. at the entrance to Burritt Street, a plaque notes it is "approximately" the place where, in the Maltese Falcon novel, Brigid O'Shaughnessy did in Sam Spade's partner Miles Archer.

[Bob Patterson, 10/03/2009]

Originally someone spray-painted "Miles Archer was shot here" on the pavement where the murder took place. The city scrubbed it off and replaced it with a plaque, but it makes no mention that the shooting was a work of fiction. July 2019: Photo added.
