[Todd Kent, 12/14/2020]A two room house of buffalo grass sod blocks, built in 1894 by Marshal McCully, is the last of the authentic sod houses. After staking out property in an 1893 Oklahoma land run, McCully first lived in a dugout in a ravine. The following year he constructed the sod dwelling, with alkali clay used to plaster the inside walls. His family lived in it until 1909, and the sod home was used for storage until 1963, when it was acquired by the Oklahoma Historical Society.
The furnished sod home is open to visitors.
