Paul Bunyan Muffler Man.

Paul Bunyan Muffler Man

Visiting this Bunyan comes with an adventurous, scenic road trip, especially if you're traveling east and drive through Palisades State Park. It has a trespass-y feel since you have to pass the front gate and enter the scout campground, but he stands immediately after the entrance, across from a few administration buildings. Despite his sun-faded paint, the rumors about his painted-on chest hair are true. Past entries about his falls into the nearby lake seem confirmed by the mossy dirt patches on his face and arms, as opposed to the dry paint chipping I've seen on other Paul Bunyan Muffler Men.

Paul Bunyan is still alive and well. Getting a little mossy on the arms, though.

Muffler Man - Boy Scout Camp Mascot

The Boy Scout Camp Mascot Muffler Man is alive and well, standing sentry at the camp. As previously noted, he does indeed have some chest hair poking out of the top of his shirt. Muy macho.

The entrance arch to Camp Bullowa is flanked by two small Boy Scout statues; the Paul Bunyan Muffler Man is a little further on, next to the parking lot. His steady gaze and sure grip on a custom-made double-sided axe (perhaps someone's Eagle Scout project?) has inspired generations of youth on outdoor adventures. The manly virtues of Muffler Men are espoused on a nearby wooden sign:Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly.... wait, that's just the "Boy Scout Law"...

In any event, this is the first Muffler Man we've observed with tuffs of chest hair poking out of his shirt.

Muffler Man - Boy Scout Camp Mascot

Muffler Man in traditional blue pants, red shirt Paul Bunyan garb, is the unofficial mascot of Camp Bullowa Boy Scout Camp of the Hudson Valley Council.

As an interesting aside, he used to be on top of the amphitheater at camp, which overlooks the lake. Three or four times a year he would be shoved off the cliff and found floating face down in the lake like some sort of mafia hit. He now stands near the camp ranger's house for safekeeping as he welcomes visitors into camp.
