New York Loft Filled with Dirt
The New York Earth Room is part of the Dia art foundation, named after Dia Beacon, a humongous former Nabisco packaging plant in Beacon, New York, filled with rooms of dirt, broken windshield glass, rocks, neon, etc. The Earth Room is open Wednesday to Sunday only, 12pm-3pm and 3:30pm-6pm. Do not come on the off hours! We were just greeted by a very surly and upset resident of the building who told us to read the sign on the wall. Apparently this mess happens to them a lot. Or he was just a grumpy old man, says my 10-year-old son.

I was worried this place would be difficult to find, but there were plenty of signs leading us to the exhibit. Stop in if you're in the neighborhood. We've never seen anything like it!
[Kristi, 06/12/2017]I read about the Loft of Dirt on the website and I work near it. Unfortunately they don't allow pictures, but it was really amazing. Considering I work in a loft, to see one filled with dirt just blew my mind. There's a rich earthy scent when you go in. I really do wish I could have gotten a pic.
[Carol Jacob, 04/21/2011]The New York Earth Room is a long-term art installation that consists of an empty second floor loft that is filled with 280,000 pounds of dirt. According to the Dia Art Foundation website, the dirt is 22" deep and covers 3,600 square feet of floor space. It was originally installed in 1977.
