In keeping with Albuquerque's increased focus on water conservation, the small park where the Madonna of the Trail statue stands is currently being "xeriscaped." All of the grass has been dug out and the grounds are being landscaped with drought-tolerant xeric plants. The statue faces west, and is difficult to photograph in the morning when looking into the rising sun.
