This is a landmark along U.S. Highway 41 in the city of Kearsarge. It is a memorial to the 1862 naval ship, constructed as a WPA Project in the 1930s.
It looks nothing like the original naval sloop U.S.S. Kearsarge, in service from 1862-1894. From what I can find out, the city was named after the ship by a Calumet and Hecla mining employee who had served on her during the Civil War.
