Langtry, Texas was the home of Judge Roy Bean in the late 1800s, where the "Law West of the Pecos" was practiced by him, "by gobs!"
Known for his "hang' em first, try 'em later" attitude, the Judge has been portrayed on the big screen by Walter Brennan in the 1940 film "The Westerners" (Brennan won an Academy Award), and by Paul Newman in 1972's "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" directed by John Huston.
The Judge had a life-long obsession with the British actress Lilly Langtry (the mistress of Prince Edward, ultimately King Edward VII ) and Bean named his saloon after her in a failed attempt to entice her to visit him in Langtry, Texas.
Across from the original saloon is a very nice Visitor Center.
