Angel Was Here, Birthed Mormonism

A statue of the angel Moroni stands atop the hill where he gave Joseph Smith the golden plates -- and if you're unfamiliar with Mormonism, that probably sounds strange.

Hill Cumorah (Mormon Visitor Center)

The visitor center is staffed with friendly Mormons willing to show you the birthplace of Mormonism, where Joseph Smith met the angel.

For non-Mormons, it's an amusing stop where you can get a free Book of Mormon. Also, there is a giant Mormon festival every year.

Joseph Smith was born in Vermont. Palmyra is where he said he received golden tablets from the angel Moroni, whose statue stands atop a hill behind the visitors center.
