Built in 1959, the Jamestown buffalo is the biggest and heaviest -- it weighs 60 tons -- in the world.

Jamestown is home to newly named "Dakota Thunder." This behemoth is 46 ft. long, 26 ft. high, 14 ft. wide, and weighs in at 60 tons! It was sculpted and placed by Elmer Paul Petersen in 1959.

From the vantage point of the big guy, you can also view a free roaming buffalo herd, including several albino buffalo, which are sacred to the native tribes.

World's Largest Buffalo - Buffed Up

The World's Largest Buffalo in Jamestown, ND, got a makeover on June 20, 2007, by Hampton Hotels' Save-A-Landmark program. Ten Hampton volunteers worked with Elmer Petersen, the original artist and sculptor of the Buffalo, and contributed an estimated 100 hours of manpower and more than $16,000 toward the 60-ton bison.

This huge bison sits just off I-94 on the east side of Jamestown, ND. There is a little fakey, "Frontier town" with some old buildings and stuff and some real bison in a pen adjacent to that.

I-94 exit 258. Drive north. Turn right at the stoplight at the Frontier Village National Buffalo Museum green highway sign onto 17th St. SW/Louis Lamour Lane. Follow the road into Frontier Village, then bear left to arrive at the giant buffalo.
