Kapaau, Big Island, Hawaii: King Kamehameha I Statue #1

This statue was supposed to be unveiled in 1879, but sank in a shipwreck. It was dredged up by fishermen in the Falkland Islands, and used as a kind of cigar store Indian. When it finally reached Honolulu, a replacement -- King Kamehameha I Statue #2 -- had already gone up in its place. This one wound up in front of the King's birthplace.

King Kamehameha I is in front of a community center, we happened to catch a group of seniors learning a hula dance inside. Signage about the statue's shipwreck past is around it.

This statue of Hawaii's only king was lost at sea in 1880 in a shipwreck en route from Italy, where it was forged. It was recovered in 1912, off the Falkland Islands, and eventually placed near his birthplace on Hawaii's Big Island.
