Bunyan statue at Mays Cafe.

Muffler Man - Bunyan Mutant

So tall!

[Dennis, 07/23/2011]

Conditionally categorized as a Muffler Man mutant, since he only shares the hand position and none of the familiar fiberglass pieces. His continuing career as a big American woodsman promoting Vietnamese cuisine is unique.

Muffler Man - Bunyan Mutant

Some background on the origin of this statue: This originally appeared above the Duke City Lumber Company store in the early 1960's. The lumber store became a hardware store and is currently a Vietnamese Cafe. The cafe owners took advantage of the grandfather clause in the Albuquerque sign ordinance, which makes such a monstrosity illegal today, and left it standing. This gives them a huge attraction that makes everyone wonder how the lumberjack is connected to a cafe.

Muffler Man

Another interesting tidbit about the ABQ Muffler Man at the May Cafe. It is known among the Cuban population in Albuquerque simply as "Fidel." A rather uncanny resemblance, no?

Muffler Man - Bunyan Mutant

Just a quick update on the ABQ. Muffler Man. He is located at the corner of Central Ave. and Louisiana Blvd. SE on the edge of an area known to locals as "the war zone". It is a Paul Bunyan type, complete with an axe(which may come in handy in that neighborhood). He sits atop an excellent Vietnamese restaurant called May Cafe. The building used to house a hardware store.
