The historical marker is still here - though it's not readily visible from the street. It's tucked away behind the MARTA station and stands beside the renovated hotel.

On Dec. 7, 1946, Atlanta's Winecoff hotel was the site of the deadliest hotel fire in US history. The pre-dawn blaze killed 119 people in a building that was considered "fireproof." The structure, as noted on the marker, "had neither fire escapes, fire doors, nor sprinklers." And no way for firefighters to reach above the 8th floor of the 15-story building. The marker is dedicated to the victims, survivors, and firemen.
