It's increasingly rare to see new statues created celebrating Confederate leadership. Johnson is considered the last rebel general to fight effectively against Union forces, in March 1865, the waning months of the long, long Civil War. He clashed in Bentonville, and ultimately surrendered there. The statue stands on part of the battlefield, defiantly just outside the state-run section, because the "Defender of the Southland" was not officially proposed or approved.
