The Grant Hotel's Grant Grill restaurant used to ban women patrons until after 3 pm, so they wouldn't interfere with the city's male power brokers. A women's protest ended that, and the exclusionary plaque is preserved.

At first blush, the "Men Only Until 3:00 PM" sign seems out of place. However, after a couple minutes, you feel the highbrow ambience of the hotel and how the high-powered men of the time would limit the input of women. A nice hotel with a very interesting history.

The Grant Grill restaurant, in the U.S. Grant Hotel, was a major hot spot for the movers-and-shakers in San Diego politics and business. Women were not permitted in the restaurant during these power lunches. In 1969, a group of women staged a sit-in and forced the restaurant to change its men-only policy.
The sign declaring "Men Only Until 3:00 PM" is located, along with an explanatory plaque, in the hotel lobby just to the right of the grill's entrance.
