Folkston Funnel - Train Watching Platform

I realized that there were some folks on the planet who are really really into trains. But not at this level. I met some who traveled from all over the place to come to the Folkston Funnel. They had it all: laptops with programs showing what train was going where and where it was, apps for their phones that let them listen to rail road radio traffic. They shared train sightings stories and stories of rail lore. This is a great place to get a glimpse of the American train subculture. The previous tip covers the layout. It's the folks you get to meet that are the real treasure.

Sixty trains a day go through this rail choke point to and from Florida. It may have just the right combo of convenience and activity to switch off our customary railroad ennui.
