Floyd's City Barber Shop
I had never seen a working child's barber chair until we stopped here (Although Floyd's still has the original board that was placed across the big chair's arms before the child's chair arrived).
We spent 45 minutes talking to Bill Hiatt, whose dad once cut Andy Griffith's hair. It was the highlight of our trip, since we spent so much time talking to Bill that we missed the Snappy Lunch (next door), which closes at 1:15. Take some cash for the tip jar at Floyd's.

What a fun stop! The son of the barber who cut Andy Griffith's hair was there (he does not cut hair). He is so fun to talk to, and takes your picture in the chair Andy used and posts it on his website. This was our favorite spot of the town.

Contrary to an earlier tip, Russell Hiatt was not the inspiration for Floyd on The Andy Griffith Show, but the barbershop itself where he worked for decades -- starting when he was a young man -- may have been. The shop was re-named Floyd's to capitalize on the show's popularity. Russell Hiatt said he cut Andy's hair once while Andy was home from college. Russell was a beloved local figure.
