Clearly the inscription of "IT" was done many years later than the much older historic stone that was put there to honor a loved one. It's (and I speak for IT), obvious that, for whatever reason, someone vandalized this grave marker as a mean form of recreation. Whether it was a "cripple," slave, or unfortunate person in life -- now we must continue to disgrace this person in death as well?? The only true "IT" is the wretched person who carved the letters on the grave marker to begin with. Would you like your grave to read the same?

This is actually my home town. The "word of mouth" history behind the gravestone is that a man came into town looking to work on the farms, and ended up passing away in the winter months. They kept him in a barn, frozen, until they could bury him, but no one knew his name -- so they marked his grave, "IT." It has also been mentioned that he wouldn't have been buried unless he held status in the town, so there must be more to the story. I have also heard that IT was a "cripple." It is creepy nonetheless. As for the mansion across the street, yeah, it's haunted. There are four other cemeteries in the town with headstone stories -- some really interesting ones (like getting struck by lightning).
[Ashley, 08/24/2013]This may not be where your vehicle GPS says it is. We put in the address for the Town of Middlefield offices (188 Skyline Trail) into our GPS, but the location it gave was well shy of where the offices are. We kept on driving for 5-10 more minutes, passing Bell Cemetery, until we reached Middlefield and the town offices. The cemetery is visible from the road, and there is a plaque by the road describing the cemetery. Basic tip: if you haven't actually passed a sign that says you've entered Middlefield, keep driving until you do. Otherwise you might think you'll never find it, and you totally will.

I had to find this hidden gem after reading about it online! Had some difficulty finding it but definitely worth it when I finally did. It is located behind the new town hall, which is an old elementary school. The grave is apart from the other stones and it's carved by hand, with only the letters "IT." Leave it up to your imagination as to what's buried there.
They say it's behind Town Hall but it's behind the new town hall, not the old. The grave is located behind an elementary school in the far left corner near the woodline.

The IT gravestone is in the back of Mack Cemetery, by itself (get it?). There is nothing carved on it except for "IT." Over the years I have found various rumors about it on the internet -- that it was baby of unknown sex, a witch, a woman and her child from a black servant, that an unspeakable horror was buried there. . . The cemetery might be haunted, as well as the creepy mansion across the street.
