I don't claim to know anything about sculpture -- but if I had seen this when I was young, maybe I would have been inspired to try my hand at it! It seems to have a message, but a mysterious message, and open to interpretation. The Sawyer is apparently filing an edge on a sawmill-sized saw blade that has morphed out of a large white pine log. Timber was probably the resource that initially drew white men to this area, and then iron ore was its claim to fame. So the sculpture reveals a lot of the history of this place in a single piece of art. Very clever and fascinating!
