Reflector House - Gone

Late Memorial Day I drove to Horton, planning my arrival for sunset, hoping to use the sun behind me to capture some especially radiant photos of the house. Sadly I discovered that it is time to move "Reflector House" over to the "Gone But Not Forgotten" list.

A Horton local explained that Mr. Duree's house sits directly behind a hard turn at the end of a long road in the small community of Kennekuk, just southeast of town. Whether the home had actually been hit by a careless motorist, or Mr. Duree simply considered it a likely possibility was unclear. I was told that initially the reflectors outlined the home, then as more were added a pattern evolved. Finally the house was more or less ... covered.

The house is still there, but after Mr. Duree's passing, the new owner removed the reflectors. Then he replaced the home's siding, as the reflectors left too many holes.

Reflector House

Just south of Horton, Kansas, there is a house and garage with reflectors placed all over! It is a sight to see at night. When we had visitors from out of town, my father enjoyed taking them to see this house. First he would pull up to the house, turn off the car lights and then turn them back on so the people could get a "full effect." Then he would turn the car around and show them the house of reflectors with the break lights! The house was owned by a Mr Durre, who has passed away.
