Minneapolis, Minnesota: Grave of VP Hubert Humphrey
When Hubert Humphrey died in 1978, he didn't want a fancy tombstone -- and he didn't get one. His grave is marked by a plaque set into the ground with just his name, birth year, and death year. Behind it is a low granite wall engraved with a farewell quote ("I have enjoyed my life....") and a large reproduction of his signature.

Kurt Deion, frequent photo contributor and researcher for our Roadside Presidents iPhone app, recently completed his long-sought personal quest: seeing the grave of every US President and Vice President. Kurt has been dropping in on the final resting places of Chief Executives since he was eight years old. He wrote: "On January 10, 2014 I visited the grave of Hubert Humphrey, which was my 41st and final vice presidential burial site. It is my belief that this made me, at age 19, the only person in the world to visit the graves of every US president and vice president."
Kurt let us know he spent some time clearing snow off of various cemetery markers to find the elusive and humble-in-death Humphrey, LBJ's vice-president.
The Humphrey is a remarkable achievement for Kurt, but surviving Presidents and VPs are not immortal. Now it's a matter of monitoring health reports and keeping a bag packed.
