Clearwater, Florida: Appeal to Divine Providence
In the late 1990s Stanley James Watts created a sculpture of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin kneeling in prayer, apparently just after writing the Declaration of Independence, which is still clutched in Jefferson's hand. Watts named the sculpture, "Appeal to Divine Providence," and sold versions in various sizes. The biggest, with the bronze Founding Fathers one-and-a-half-times life size, weighs almost two tons. At least two of these sculptures are on public display, although there's no historical record that Franklin, Adams, and Jefferson ever actually did this. The source of a quote on the statue's base, attributed to Jefferson, "The Bible is the cornerstone of liberty," has also proved elusive.
