Creepy Goddess of Life: Gift for Herbert Hoover

A bronze statue of the goddess Isis, blackened with age, was a gift from the Belgians to Herbert Hoover and his wife in 1922. It looks like a cemetery monument from a bad horror movie.

It's creepy. No doubt about it. What does Isis have to do with Belgians?

[Matt L., 09/17/2013]

The people of Belgium gave the statue to Herbert Hoover in 1922. Isis, the Egyptian patroness of nature, was chosen because Hoover had helped Belgium recover from a series of disastrous floods.
