The bell is the only survivor of an explosion that killed several people, but also sparked the whirlwind romance of future First Lady Julia Tyler.

Apparently the makers of the U.S.S. Princeton cannon didn't know what they were doing. It could easily have killed President Tyler and changed the course of history. It is very cool that you can walk right up, put your hands on history and ring the bell really loud! Careful though, Princeton PD is next door.
