Directions:: From Hwy 32, just north of the Massachusetts state line, turn east onto Green Woods Rd. Drive to the end, park, and continue on foot. Bear to the left, following Greenwood Rd (which becomes an ATV trail) for about a half mile. The trail ends at another trail, Monument Rd. Turn left, and follow Monument Rd about a quarter mile to the monument.

Eliza Ballou was born in 1801 in the backwoods of New Hampshire -- and it's still the backwoods of New Hampshire. Someone hauled a big stone monument to her birth site, but be prepared to hike if you want to see it.

We must love our moms -- or feel really guilty about our assassinated Presidents -- because someone took the trouble to haul this heavy obelisk to the remote spot where President Garfield's mother was born. It's as wild today as it was on her birthday in 1801.
