Leesburg, Virginia: Mighty Midget Kitchen

Tasty German "hand food" from a window in a piece of a recycled B-29 bomber. It looks like a large outdoor refrigerator. Under renovation; not serving food as of 2023.

Mighty Midget Kitchen

The MM Kitchen is still up and running and doing quite well. It has no resemblance to an aircraft fuselage but still looks pretty cool. We didn't eat there due to the limited seating (a couple of picnic tables) but found a good pizza place across the street.

Mighty Midget Kitchen

The Mighty Midget Kitchen is my favorite restaurant in Northern Virginia! It's constructed from a piece of recycled B-29 bomber. It was slated for destruction around 2000, and Leesburg residents were upset about its destruction. The Town of Leesburg assumed the deed, and the kitchen moved to its current location. The town rents the "facility" to B'z BBQ. It is so awesome! It's a piece of history, and a good bbq place all at the same time!

Mighty Midget Kitchen

This is a great take out restaurant in Leesburg that is in a small metallic box. It's been there since about 1948 and looks like a giant refrigerator. The food was great, typical diner type stuff, hamburgers etc. and the menu was surprisingly big considering the "building" can't be more than 6' by 6' if that.

I did a little surfing to see what I could find out about the continued existence of the Mighty Midget Kitchen. I couldn't find anything more recent than about March or June of last year, but in Leesburg city council minutes they have been talking about it for a about a year. Apparently it was moved and the guy who runs it is too old and sick to continue, so the city hopes someone else will take it over. An article in the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star said it was demolished but also said an effort is being made to save it (???).

Anyway if anyone goes to see it and it's not there, the day won't be wasted because you're only about a half an hour from Dinosaurland and Winchester's big apple (situated in front of Gen. Sheridan's HQ). Also, if you can't eat at the Mighty Midget, check out the Leesburg restaurant (I think that's the name, it's on business 15 in the center of town about a block from the Court house and the Biker Bar), a good diner with booths that must be at least 50 years old, or the Triangle Diner in Winchester, one of the few real diners around, which has also has a good selection on the jukebox (the food's better at the Leesburg Restaurant).
