In Foxworth, from the intersection of Hwys 586 and 587, drive west a half-mile on Hwy 586. On the left, set back in the trees, you'll see the white Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. The grave is behind it, with the biggest headstone in the churchyard.

Grave of World's Oldest Man and Last Living Slave

About a mile west after the 586 - 587 intersection, behind the small Methodist church. Just a small cemetery, his marker is near the middle, it is new and tall.

Definitely worth the stop if you're checking out the Grand Canyon of Mississippi.

Grave of America's Last Slave and Civil War Veteran

Sylvester Magee was America's last slave and the nation's last Confederate veteran and the last Union veteran. Born in 1841 and died in 1971 at the age of 130 years. At the time of his death he was the oldest person in America. For over forty years, Sylvester Magee never received a gravestone. On February 23, 2012, a monument was dedicated in a memorial service to his historic life and memory.

The cemetery is located behind Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church on Highway 586 in Foxworth, Mississippi in Marion County. His monument is the largest in the cemetery, with a one ton granite slab over the gravesite.
