Old Sarge, fighting Marine Corps "Devil Dog" of World War II, was a brave German shepherd who saved 9 marines and was awarded a purple heart. When he died at age 20, Old Sarge was seen off with a full military funeral and 15 gun salute.

Statue Of Old Sarge - Dog Hero of World War II

On the corner of Beach Blvd and Yorktown stands Sea Breeze Pet Cemetery. Your standard fare for a pet cemetery: Rows of markers for Fido and Mittens, small statues and a separate "cat area." Rumored to be the last resting place of John Wayne's German Shepherd and a few pets belonging to Karen Carpenter.

Old Sarge was a trained German Shepherd, a decorated war hero of the World War II Pacific theater, saving nine marines in combat. He survived to return to the states, and when he died he received a military funeral.
