Carrollton, Kentucky: 1988 School Bus Disaster
Official green highway sign flags the site of a 1980s calamity, but provides no details. The head-on drunk driver collision, and subsequent fire, killed 25 children, an adult chaperon, and the bus driver.

Site of the May 14, 1988 bus crash in which drunk driver Larry Wayne Mahoney collided with a church bus. 27 people on the bus were killed. The accident is considered a landmark because numerous changes to drunk driving and bus safety laws were enacted as a result.
There is only a sign marking the spot on the highway, and no safe place to pull off.
