Lucky street corner is a magnet for tossed shoes -- pairs and singles. No tree, no fence, just a gravel shoulder with a scattering of footwear. There may be a posted sign describing the crime you're committing if you participate.

- Just east of the IL/IN state line. South of town. From US Hwy 41, turn west at the stoplight onto 109th Ave. Drive two miles, to the corner of 109th and Calumet Aves. That's Shoe Corner.

[M piepho, 03/21/2018]At this four-way stop, people have been tossing shoes for years. There are many stories about the origins of Shoe Corner. One of them is that a farmer who lived nearby was poor and had lots of children to feed and clothe.
[mbb81, 02/04/2015]The shoes are reportedly cleaned out and taken away every single Monday, only to be replaced by a new batch the following week. That takes a lot of dedicated shoe-tossers.
Shoes (singles and in pairs) have been mysteriously appearing at this North West Indiana intersection for years. Recently a sign was erected with a message saying that anyone found dropping shoes would be fined. The sign itself disappeared after a short while!
[Lou, 06/20/2012]This is not a Shoe Tree -- it's an arbitrary corner of an intersection with a gravel shoulder where drivers toss shoes. We suspect this is cleaned up regularly, so keep your expectations really low....Nov. 2013: Photo added.
