Talkeetna, Alaska: Cat Mayor

Stubbs, a cat, won the civic post in 1997 via write-in votes in this village of 900. The election story was made up (the town actually doesn't have a mayor), but that didn't stop sales of t-shirts and feline mayoral decrees pronounced on behalf of the cat. Stubbs died, age 20, on July 21, 2017. The new mayor is Denali, also a cat.

Mayor Denali is a very sweet gentleman. It's worth trying the homemade ice cream at this stop for its local flavors (huckleberry, fireweed).

The town tried to run a dog campaign against Denali after Stubbs (who survived a dog assassination attempt) passed away, but the dog did not live to election day, and Denali won the vote. Mysterious, fluffy circumstances.

Denali has been the mayor of Talkeetna since 2017, succeeding Mayor Stubbs, who was also a cat.

Mayor Stubbs lives! There was a nasty rumor going around the internet is that he died, but as of July 3, 2016, he is alive and well at 19 years old, according to KTUU Channel 2 news in Anchorage.
