Talkeetna, Alaska: Cat Mayor
Stubbs, a cat, won the civic post in 1997 via write-in votes in this village of 900. The election story was made up (the town actually doesn't have a mayor), but that didn't stop sales of t-shirts and feline mayoral decrees pronounced on behalf of the cat. Stubbs died, age 20, on July 21, 2017. The new mayor is Denali, also a cat.

I regret to inform you all, but mayor Stubbs has gone on to the litter box in the sky. I'm glad I got to meet him. RIP Mayor Stubbs.

Stubbs was hanging out upstairs in the general store when we visited. Like most mayors, he enjoyed heavy petting. He is very vocal and sweet.
