The area has changed a little bit since the pic was taken. Of additional interest are the murals on the wall of the bldg adjacent to the park that represent the history of Silver Spring.
Also, diagonally across the intersection from the park is the front portion of the old Canada Dry bldg. While it is now an apt complex, it still has the big red Canada Dry sign from back in the day. If you walk inside, you can see the spiral staircase and 'bubble' designs on the floor that were meant to represent the carbonation in the drink.
And one last point if you walk away from the Canada Dry bldg down Newell Street, you can see the site of one of the old post offices. There is a huge postage cancellation on the ground and other works of art to commemorate the history of the site.

A Gazebo shaped like a giant acorn. Looks much larger than the "world's largest acorn" from your listings. You can get married in it.
[Douglas McCallum, 06/02/2001]A small urban park dominated by a huge acorn shaped shelter. Many folks think this is the location of the "ORIGINAL" Silver Spring, but the water fountain spouts pure filtered Potomac River, courtesy Washington Sub. San. Commission. The actual Silver Spring was located under the present day Blair Mill Towers apartment complex.
