Smith Mansion - Towering Log House

Francis Lee Smith labored over 22 years to build this five-story log structure in Wapiti Valley, then fell to his death in 1992 from one of its countless balconies. Abandoned for years, his daughter still owns it, and raises money for its restoration.

Smith Mansion

I visited Smith Mansion a couple years ago after volunteering to help Sunny Larson with a fundraiser poker run. Stayed there two nights, climbed the house to the eagle's nest with her husband Paul and friend. The mansion was not neglected intentionally, but for lack of finances. Vandalism and theft have not helped the cause to preserve. The property is fenced and gated; respect the No Trespassing signs. Driving From Yellowstone toward Cody, you can see the Mansion more than a mile away.

Smith Mansion - Towering Log House

Good view from highway. For sale sign on building. Old and kinda run down -- obviously it has been neglected for a while. Still very interesting to look at.

Towering Wooden Freak House

About 2.5 miles west of Watipi. Best viewed from the road. You can get another view if you turn left on 6DU then right on Paintbrush Drive. You can't get too close because of no trespassing signs. Worth a stop but because you can't get to it, I wouldn't suggest a detour.
