Tom Mann at the grave of Leroy Brown, fish.

Leroy Brown, Tom Mann's Famous Fish Dies

August 20, 1980: When he died on this day, Leroy Brown was America's most famous fish. A celebrity in Eufaula, Alabama -- the Bass Fishing Capital of the World -- his funeral had 800 mourners, and Alabama's governor declared it an official state day of mourning. Some ghoul then stole Leroy's body (it disappeared in Oklahoma). Sportsman TV personality Tom Mann erected a proper grave memorial at his store in Eufaula (since shuttered). The town remembers Leroy with the grave's life-size marble statue, displayed on a pedestal downtown.

Fun stop on our way through Eufaula. The statue of Leroy Brown is on the island in the middle as you go through town, about 4 foot tall. Quick and easy.

Leroy Brown - Tom Mann's Fish World

On June 12, 2010, I set out to find out if the statue and/or memorial to Leroy Brown was still located at 1951 North Eufaula Avenue, Eufaula, Alabama. Eufaula is approximately 45 minutes from my home in Dothan, Alabama. We went to the address, but it was nowhere to be found. There was a Texaco near the address so we went there. There is an alligator pond behind the gas station. Once we entered the gas station, the attendant inside said she didn't know anything about the fish, but that the gas station used to be the spot known as Tom Mann's Fish World and that it used to be a very popular place. After talking to several people outside and inside the gas station, no one knew anything about Leroy Brown.

I looked all around the grounds and could find nothing. There is another building right beside the gas station, but I was unable to find it on that property either.

Thanks for checking that out -- RIP Leroy Brown... wherever you are!

Grave of Leroy Brown

My dad lives in Eufaula and we stopped by to see the grave of Leroy Brown. Tom's Fish World is now a realty company. There is a gas station there and the clerk told us Leroy Brown was on display in the aquarium in Atlanta (not sure about that). We walked around behind the old Fish world and there is evidence of what was probably a really neat place in its day. It is all falling apart and fenced off however. We did not find Leroy's "grave." There is a pond in back though where you can see lots of gators and turtles.

The latest we've heard (earlier today) was that the Leroy grave and monument is still on the property, near the pond. Phillip Mann wrote: "Hey! Leroy AND his headstone are still in place! Also, Mann's Bait Company is still there." There were three buildings in the complex, so perhaps one is a realtor and one continues in its jelly worm mission.
