Skunk Ape.

Big Gorilla Statue

The property that the gorilla resides in is for sale, but is still accessible. He has been vandalized with paint but overall okay. He is directly off Highway 19.

Big Gorilla Statue - Skunk Ape

This was supposed to represent a Florida Skunk Ape. Behind it was a roadside attraction and store named Hornblowers. It sold taxidermied animals, snake skins, etc. It had a two-headed calf on display that was featured in the attraction's flyer.

Kissing the gorilla.

Big Gorilla Statue

This giant gorilla stands along Hwy 19 asking passersby for food, money, or maybe just offering a lending hand as a seat. On the other hand, maybe he is just trying to cop a feel. I do know one thing for sure: he is heavy duty! After numerous posing positions, and his arm still being attached (thank goodness!), we gave him a kiss and were on our way.

Unfortunately, someone felt the need to paint the gorilla's toes -- one foot has yellow while the other is a deep red color. There's also some yellow paint on his body and face. But no worries, Gorilla: you're still perfect, with some killer teeth, and that's why we love you.

The Crystal River Gorilla

A sturdy 12-foot-tall gorilla, certainly worth a pull-over and quick pic. The adjacent sign is gone, so there is no evidence as to what business needed this mascot to greet its customers (The little yellow building behind it looks more like a private residence than the former home of any commerce). This Kong is in good company -- you'll see at least two dinosaurs and a giant shark along the road as you drive south.

Its outstretched paw seems built for a sit-in-me photo-op, King Kong style.
