Katrina High Water Mark

I am a local. The water mark is no longer visible on the concrete and it is no longer lit up. There were a few companies that came in and wanted to build hotels and other businesses near the interstate. When asked what that concrete slab was, they were told. Then they decided not to take a chance and invest there. Stupid idea on our leader's part. So they removed the blue line painted on it, but everyone knows what it is (insert eyeroll).

The slabs commemorate how high the water rose in 2005, reaching the I-10 overhead span where it crosses over Highway 603.

Blink and you miss it during the day -- at night it's lit up. Right at the intersection of I-10 and Hwy 43. [Rose, 11/02/2015]

We saw this and it is very sobering to imagine water being that high that far inland.

High water monument.

Concrete slab off of I-10E, exit 13 showing water level after Katrina. It's right next to the overpass.

[Racheal, 01/06/2013]

There are two monuments, one on each side of the interstate. In 2011, the local papers reported that the town council griped to the state about the monument (which forever immortalizes how high water gets in a bad hurricane). It might discourage sought-after business development near the interchange.
