House of Doors: Muffler Man No. 2
I stopped to see the Bunyan at the House of Doors yesterday and, just on a lark, I went in to ask about the "other" Muffler Man reportedly purchased by the owner for his other store. A sales rep took me outside to see the Muffler Man awaiting repairs, and a zoning variance, to be installed at the other House of Doors location in Salem, CT.
This guy needs some TLC ASAP. It was a rare find, a Muffler Man flat on his back, waiting for his moment in the sun. I felt like I got a backstage pass!
[Dean Acquaviva, 04/07/2016]Muffler Man - Vague Recollections
Photo of the St. George Muffler Man I took back in September of 1987, when he was holding a rifle. I think it was a sporting goods store then.
[GreggW, 06/27/2009][We checked in with Owen Johnson on the fate of the Bridger/Billings M-Man:] The Paul Bunyan Muffler Man that I had last in Billings was sold and moved to Connecticut. The gentleman that I sold it to owns The House of Doors and is opening another store and wanted it because he has one at his other location in Conn. It was moved in the fall of 2008.
I still have the complete A&W burger family but no more muffler men.
[Owen Johnson, 01/30/2009]Muffler Man - Missing!
Went to make my yearly pilgrimmage to see the Muffler Man in St. George, Utah. HE'S MISSING! The motorcycle shop became a car stereo outlet, and subsequently they painted over the word "motorcycle" and left him with only "St. George" printed on his shirt. Last year as I visited there was a "for sale" sign on the property and the car stereo shop looked defunct. Well...that's confirmed...and our muffler man is no longer there.
[Splatt the Harley Ratt, 09/28/2001]Here is a photo, provided by M-man owner Owen Johnson in March 2002, of the St. George Muffler Man...
He looms like some kind of eerie sentinel over the main drag (St. George Blvd.) in town. Apparently, he loves hoggin' since he is currently the trademark/logo of the cycle shop that he stands above (968 East St. George Blvd., Suite B) Gosh, he's tall.

This specimen has traveled thousands of miles; reported in our database in St. George, Utah; then moved to Billings and then Bridger, Montana. House of Doors bought him circa 2008 with the intention of placing him at their Salem location, but it appears that New England weather has not been kind.
