In 1971, a group of five friends at San Rafael High -- calling themselves the Waldos -- would meet at the school's outdoor Louis Pasteur statue at 4:20 pm to hang out, smoke pot, or search for a fabled crop growing in the vicinity. Their secret code was eventually passed onto members of the Grateful Dead, who helped spread its usage far and wide. Now it's the national holiday of marijuana.
