San Rafael, California: 420 Stoner Birthplace

San Rafael High School stoners first used the Louis Pasteur statue in front of their school as a daily hangout spot at 4:20 pm. An unofficial cannabis holiday is observed on April 20 (4/20), although not at this statue on school grounds.

420 Stoner Birthplace

It happened here!

[Val Darrington, 09/03/2018]

In 1971, a group of five friends at San Rafael High -- calling themselves the Waldos -- would meet at the school's outdoor Louis Pasteur statue at 4:20 pm to hang out, smoke pot, or search for a fabled crop growing in the vicinity. Their secret code was eventually passed onto members of the Grateful Dead, who helped spread its usage far and wide. Now it's the national holiday of marijuana.
