Tompkins Square has the country's first dog run. Its present incarnation was contructed when the Parks Department redid the park after the riots in the early 90s. First Run is appropriately the run's official name. The run is one of the largest in the city, too, so it has several hundred visitors a day. On weekends, tourists from the suburbs bring their dogs to play. First Run has an annual halloween dog parade, a hydrant fountain, and a memorial bone statue where owners put their dead dogs' tags.
